Why More Parents Are Skipping Group Classes for Private Newborn Education

If you've spent any time in a pregnancy groups or chatted with other expecting parents, you've probably heard some version of this: "We took the hospital or group class and honestly... it wasn't that helpful."

Hospital and group-based newborn classes have been the default for a long time. They check a box. They give you a tour. They cover the basics. But more and more parents are walking away feeling like they learned general information without really knowing how it applies to their own baby or their own home.

That’s part of why more families are choosing private, in-home support.

What a Group Class Can (and Can’t) Do

Group classes serve a purpose. They’re accessible, they give you an overview, and they can help you feel like you’ve started preparing.

But they’re designed for the average situation.

Your family isn’t average, and your needs won’t be either.

When you’re sitting in a room with multiple families, there’s only so much space for individualized support. There isn’t time to walk through what feeding might look like for you specifically, how your home is set up, or the questions that have been sitting in the back of your mind.

Parents are starting to realize there’s a difference between being prepared and actually feeling ready.

What Happens in a Private In-Home Newborn Class

A private in-home newborn class is designed around your family—your home, your schedule, your questions, and your goals. Unlike a traditional group newborn care class, this is personalized support that meets you exactly where you are.

At Your Devoted Doula, our private newborn classes typically run between 2 to 4 hours and focus on the areas that matter most to you. This can include newborn care, feeding support, sleep foundations, and postpartum recovery, all tailored to your specific plans and preferences.

Whether you’re booking a Newborn Care + Feeding Confidence session or an LGBTQ+ family newborn prep class, the experience is hands-on and individualized. You’re not just receiving general newborn education—you’re learning how to care for your baby in your own space, with guidance that reflects your lifestyle and your needs.

During your in-home newborn class, we walk through real-life scenarios so you feel prepared for what those early days and nights actually look like. This includes feeding techniques, soothing strategies, safe sleep setup, and practical newborn care skills you can confidently use right away.

After your session, you’ll receive a personalized digital resource packet with newborn care guidance, feeding information, safe sleep recommendations based on current guidelines from the American Academy of Pediatrics, milestone expectations, and trusted local referrals—so you’re not left searching for answers later.

The Families Who Benefit Most

Private newborn education isn’t only for first-time parents. Some of the families who value it most are:

First-time parents who want to feel confident, not just “prepared.”

LGBTQ+ families who are looking for support that actually reflects their experience. Generic doesn’t always mean inclusive, and a lot of families end up feeling overlooked in traditional settings.

Families expecting multiples, where feeding, sleep, and daily logistics naturally look different.

Parents who had a challenging first postpartum experience and want to approach this one differently.

Partners who want to be involved and supported, not just present.

Why Parents Are Booking Earlier

One of the most common things I hear is, “I wish I had done this sooner.”

The sweet spot for booking a private newborn prep session is usually between 28 and 37 weeks. Early enough to absorb the information and feel prepared, but close enough that everything feels real.

Private sessions are scheduled around you, in your home, on your timeline—rather than trying to fit into a group schedule.

Why Families Choose This Type of Support

When you look at the early postpartum weeks, having the right guidance in place can completely change how you move through them.

Parents who feel supported tend to make decisions with more clarity. They ask better questions. They feel less overwhelmed in those first few days and weeks.

That’s really the goal—feeling steady in a time that can otherwise feel like a lot.
